Geocache Description:

Cache brief

The cache itself is a 17cm x 11cm x 7cm sized clip and close lunchbox hidden in a rock crack up above the cave on the top of the hill.

Climb up at your own risk - the terrain is difficult, steep and high.

More detailed Hungarian language description with additional informations about the cave can be found at cache page of the Hungarian geocaching site here

Approaching the cave

Driving on route 71 leave Balatongyörök's only roundabout at the northern exit labelled "Mogyorós u." and drive further appx.1.3km to North until you reach the Bélapi forest rest area with the recommended car park.

By bus: You can use a bus service departing from Keszthely or from Tapolca. Get off the bus at the station near to the roundabout mentioned above and walk till the Bélapi rest area along the same route as described above in the driving section.

By train: Train services are also departing from Tapolca and Keszthely. You get off the train at the only station of Balatongyörök and walk in the Kossuth Lajos street to North. After appx. 1,1km walking you get to the well known roundabout from where you follow the same route walking till you get to the rest area.

The photos I'm publishing here help you in finding the arrpopriate way and the cache. Please note they were taken in Winter when the greenery of the deciduous plants was missing so the landscape may look reasonably different visiting the cache in other seasons.

Start walking from the Bélapi rest area at waypoint Prefix P0. Below you see the Bélapi rest area and parking  place in snowfall with our dog Monty.

The following photo below shows the view looking back from R0 to the rest area - as you can see the barrier can be avoided by car for those who are 'smart':

Looking back from waypoint R1 to the parking area after passing the barrier.

After passing the barrier you keep following the tourist sign 'yellow stripe' walking on the paved but cracked-surface road till you reach waypoint Prefix R1 where you leave the paved road to the right and continue on the forest road still signed by 'yellow stripe'. You will see a slightly misleading sign with the Szobakű cave name still directed to the paved road - you must not belive it: leave the paved road and turn right  when you see this:

Turn riht and follow the yellow stripe here

Keep walking to North along the 'Yellow stripe'. You will meet the following, totally misleading sign at waypoint Prefix R2 indicating the Szobakű-cave to the opposite direction of where it really located; you must not believe it, continue to North following the 'Yellow stripe': (IMHO the reason was that this sign was placed on the wrong side of the road by mistake.)

Keep walking along the Yellow Stripe until you reach waypoint Prefix R3 where you will see a crumbling Hunting Watchtower No 6 on the left side and a stake No 26 on the right side - it means you're quite close to the destination. Below you see the Watchtower's photo:

Hunting Watchtower No 6 - turn right onto the path

An update: you will not see the above watchtower anymore as it was collapsed to the ground in early Summer 2021.

And the photo of Stake No 26 with the path leading to the cave:

Stake No 26: turn right onto the path

Here you leave the Yellow Stripe and continue on the path opening on your right and leading you down to the small valley where on the opposite side you will find the Szobakű-cave. The cave itself  is a natural water-sinkhole with a height of 6-8 meters, the width is 2-3 meters and the depth is appx 10 meters. The internal wall of the cave is pigmented by yellow minerals and by green chlorophyl  presenting a spectacular view when looking out from within the cave in the afternoon sunshine.

The entrance of the Szobakű-cave

At the time of hiding the cache we found a cache-like brown wooden box in the Szobakű-cave. NOTE: this is NOT OUR CACHE; it is probably a component of another game! Below you see the photo of the NON-CACHE:

The NON-CACHE in the Szobakű-cave

If you look above the cave you will see a black pigmented hole in the rock:

The upper black pigmented hole above the Szobakű-cave

At the time of hiding we found 'ice stalactites' hanging from the ceiling of the black hole:

The cache hide is located on the top of the hill above the black hole in the corner cracking of two perpendicular, vertical rock walls. In order to get up there you MUST NOT start climbing straight on a steep incline diretly to the cache coordinates! While standig there and watching towards  the black hole you should turn left and choose the most gently-sloping route possible. Your best route should be curving back slowly to the right and you will climb up safely onto the flat rock above the black hole. The terrain is not the easiest but it is not even an extreme one. NOTE: Mind your steps when you're watching down from the top of the rock; stand firmly first and stop stepping when making photos!

Our sixth family-member: Monty, the border collie on the flat rock above the black hole close to the cache:

The cache is hidden in the corner-cracking of two perpendicular, vertical rock walls. The box is covered by some mossy wood fragments. The crack is shown at the right side of this photo:

Te cache hide is the right vertical crack in the corner.

This photo shows what Monty could see standing on the flat rock when looking in  direction of the cache hide:

Good luck with finding the cache and enjoy the walking, the forest and the cave!
