Standing alone in a field opposite to where you are is a now-crumbling relic of Buckfastleigh's great annual event - the grandstand is all that remains of Buckfastleigh Races, held from 1884 to 1960. Originally held on Whit Monday & Tuesday, a publuc house in town was the racing HQ & special trains would bring the horses, which local people would stable or keep in fields & open spaces around the town. Princess Margaret visited the Whit Mon meet in 1949 which helped to bring attendance figures on that day to 23,000!
After National Hunt racing stopped here in 1960, the course has continued to be used 2 or 3 times a year for Point-to-point racing. The 1989 Grand National winner, Little Polveir, was ridden by local jockey Jimmy Frost. The family history of racing success, in both training & riding, continues with Jimmy's daughter, Bryony, a very successful professional jockey.
