The Wall was erected October 1961, after a dispute over the Western Allies' right to move freely through the city, that almost led to another war. The main border crossing for foreigners in and out of East Germany, got its name from the military alphabet (The Alpha and Bravo Checkpoints were on the outskirts of Berlin).

Die Mauer wurde im Oktober 1961 nach einem Streit über das Recht der Westverbündeten, sich frei durch Berlin zu bewegen errichtet. Dies führte fast zu einem weiteren Krieg. Dieser Hauptgrenzübergang (Checkpoint Charlie) für Reisende von und nach Ostdeutschland, bekam seinen Namen vom militärischen Alphabet (Die Alpha- und Bravo-Checkpoints waren Kontrollpunkte auf dem Stadtrand Berlins).
