Alfred Hitchcock's first horror/fantasy film "The Birds" was quite the sensation when it was released in 1963. Some say it was the precursor to modern horror movies. It was the first time "cinematic animals" acted in an organized attack on humans. Not only were live trained birds used in the movie but also mechanical creatures and papier-mache ravens some even wired to flap wings. Also used in the production was optically altered film overlay of flying birds.
Hitchcock knew of this Sonoma County area because he had already made a previous movie in Santa Rosa which premiered in 1943, "Shadow of a Doubt". This was filmed exclusively on location. Both "Shadow of a Doubt" and "The Birds" have been selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
