You're looking at a place where many of my teenage summers were spent. This area is known as J & S Fish Camp. My dad moved from PA to this trailer park back in 1984. He lived around Okeechobee at different places for the next 36 years and asked to have his ashes spread near here. The years he spent living at J&S were the most memorable for him. He used to work the nearby lock structure when times were slow. He was also a volunteer fireman for the old J&S fire department that is no longer in existence.
I myself lived in Okeechobee for ten years and have many fond memories of summers spent at J&S. We used to fish from the nearby dock when the boat wasn't running or we just felt like wetting a line and relaxing. Lake Okeechobee and it's surrounding rim canal are some of the best brackish water fishing spots for largemouth bass and speckled perch. I did a lot of growing up on these waters that my father is now a part of. Maybe someday, me and the old man will go fishing together one more time.
