Geocache Description:

From the church (Old Hickory Council Wachovia Cache to Eagle® #4), continue west on 5th Street, passing the Central Library on your left, then head north on Summit Street to see an episcopal church built in the style of a large English parish church of the Middle Ages. You’ll find it on the corner of Summit and Pilot View, but you’ll want to head west down to Jersey Avenue to see the playground around the back of the church. A wonderful eagle project can be seen from the sidewalk just on the other side of the playground fence (please don't enter the playground area) but you have to be pretty small to hide in this all wood playhouse built in 2015 as an eagle project. Back in May of 2016, another eagle project created 3 little free libraries for the residents of Winston-Salem to enjoy. And if you were to go back to September of 2013, you could see books and school supplies being collected for the Kid’s Cafe as yet another eagle project affiliated with this church. Still another eagle project in 2011 involved conducting a book drive and contributing books in Spanish while also building bookshelves. You WILL NOT be going up a grassy hill to find this cache. You’ll find the cache disguised as a small granite stone the size of a lemon where the bushes end and the black iron fencing installed on the brick wall begins (the picture shows you just where to find it). You will be standing on the sidewalk to find this geocache. Your next stop is approximately 1.9 miles away from this point (Old Hickory Council Wachovia Cache to Eagle® #6).

Here is more about the eagle projects that took place in this area:

  • Troop 910 scout - Build Playhouse - 8/20/2015
  • Troop 703 scout - Build and install 3 little free libraries in low income neighborhoods - 5/19/2016
  • Troop 910 scout - Gather books, school supplies & increase volunteers for Kid’s Cafe - 9/19/2013
  • Troop 910 scout - Built bookshelves, conducted a book drive and contributed books in Spanish - 2011

This Cache to Eagle® series was created to highlight many of the eagle projects in downtown Winston-Salem and Old Salem while sharing interesting facts about our city in the process. Through a scout's journey to become one of the first female Eagle Scouts in the US, she realized many scouts are in new troops and have not had the opportunity to assist with eagle projects as part of their scouting journey. She wanted these scouts to learn about eagle projects in Winston-Salem, including many that are service related. While #1 and #2 in this Cache to Eagle® series are not in downtown Winston-Salem or Old Salem, they are included in this series because they highlight the eagle projects completed by the first two females in Scouts BSA in Winston-Salem. Both Scouts are proud to be in Troop 729!

Basic Information

This course (comprised of 6 geocaches and a tour of 14 eagle projects - Old Hickory Council Wachovia Cache to Eagle® #3 through #8) is a 6 mile loop (approximately) with about 400 feet of elevation gain. It will take you about 2  hours 25 minutes to complete. There are plenty of parking options around the starting point. Please remember to replace the caches after you sign your name to the logbook (please always insert the scroll back in the cap first and then screw on the body) so others can enjoy this adventure as well - a lot of hard work went into creating this course! Be prepared to embark on your journey with water, a GPS device and other necessary supplies (hint: take your pen and paper!). Above all, make sure you obey traffic laws and watch for traffic!

If you are a scout completing the Cache to Eagle® Challenge make sure you note the principle of scout law in each cache (underside of white plastic piece) along with the location you found it in the first 12 caches in this series #1 through #8. A worksheet is included as an image for you to print out and keep track.
