René Marqués
(Arecibo, 1919-Río Piedras, 1979). Uno de los mejores escritores puertorriqueños del siglo XX. Destacado sobre todo como autor de teatro, también cultivó la novela, el ensayo, la crítica y el artículo periodístico. Luchó contra lo que veía como males del progreso que traía vulgaridad a la sociedad de su país y fue considerado un escritor rebelde.
Nacido en una familia de propietarios de tierras, el contacto con el campo lo marcará de por vida. Se graduó como ingeniero agrónomo en Mayagüez, estudió Literatura en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (España), y viajó a Nueva York, con una beca Rockefeller, para estudiar dramaturgia en la Universidad de Columbia y en el Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop; posteriormente recibió la beca Guggenheim.
En 1940 funda y preside “Areyto”, Sociedad Dramática Puertorriqueña, y en 1947 preside en Arecibo la Sociedad pro Arte, iniciándose como crítico literario en El Mundo. En 1948 se traslada a vivir a San Juan, colabora en la revista Asomante y trabaja en el Diario de Puerto Rico. Funda las compañías Teatro Nuestro junto a José Manuel Lacomba y Teatro Experimental del Ateneo, en el que también participa Nilita Vientós Gastón. En 1959 crea la empresa editorial Club del Libro de Puerto Rico.

Noted above all as a playwright, he also cultivated the novel, the essay, the criticism and the newspaper article. He fought against what he saw as evils of progress that brought vulgarity to the society of his country and was considered a rebellious writer.
Born into a family of landowners, contact with the countryside will mark him for life. He graduated as an agronomist in Mayagüez, studied literature at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), and traveled to New York, with a Rockefeller scholarship, to study playwriting at Columbia University and at the Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop; later he received the Guggenheim Fellowship.
In 1940 he founded and presided over “Areyto”, the Puerto Rican Dramatic Society, and in 1947 he presided over the Sociedad pro Arte in Arecibo, beginning as a literary critic in El Mundo. In 1948 he moved to San Juan, collaborated in the magazine Asomante and worked in the Diario de Puerto Rico. He founded the companies Teatro Nuestro together with José Manuel Lacomba and Teatro Experimental del Ateneo, in which Nilita Vientós Gastón also participates. In 1959 he created the publishing company Club del Libro de Puerto Rico.
