Geocache Description:

Welcome to the new Winston-Salem Strollway Pedestrian Bridge over Salem Parkway.  According to the Creative Corridors Coalition, it's "... the first land bridge in North Carolina and possibly the first urban land bridge in the United States."

Please do not attempt to access it from Salem Parkway.  That would be very dangerous and illegal.  Not to mention would drastically increase the terrain rating.

The WInston-Salem Strollway opened in 1988 and connects downtown Winston-Salem to the Salem Creek Greenway.  The strollway is a rail-trail along the old Tar Branch line of the Winston-Salem Southbound Railroad and passes near Old Salem and the Old Salem Visitor Center.

The original route of the strollway passed under the Business 40 bridge over Liberty Street.  If you walked under this bridge and looked up, you would know why it was rated as one of the most dangerous bridges in North Carolina.

The Liberty Street bridge was removed during the NC Business 40 Reconstruction project that started in 2018.  Business 40 was closed until early 2020 and Salem Parkway opened in its place with Liberty Street and the strollway now crossing over Salem Parkway on new bridges.  During the reconstruction project, David was able to watch much of the construction work from his office nearby.

Enjoy your walk across the new strollway bridge.
