The town of Bethel was settled in the late 18th century, formerly known as Mash's Mills (prior to the Civil War). From the 1840's- 1880's, Bethel's population declined due to more work opportunities and better farmland in the West. In the 1880's-1920's, Bethel was known for its 'Industrial Character' - its tannery, shoe shop and white granite quarry all thirved with the help of the railroad, local workers, and the immigrants from Europe who were very skilled in the 'extraction, cutting and sculpting' of granite.

Each stage has coordinates to the next place to visit, whether it's welcoming an old friend, taking a break to picnic at a river site, peacefully enjoy a walk by the river, or to finish the day with a quiet drive on a back road, maybe seeing some of Bethel's granite that was used during Tropical Storm Irene.
