Geocache Description:

Veteran’s Memorial Geocache    Thanks for your Service

A site definitely worthy of a Geocache,  the Oakley Veteran’s Memorial was dedicated on November 11, 2014 to members of the 5 Armed Services and Merchant Marines who served between  December 7, 1941 and  August 15,1945.

More than 600 people attended the celebration

The site will not be Muggle-free on 11/11

Wheelchair accessible but might not be reachable by someone in a wheelchair.  Can't edit out the attribute for some reason.

History:

1921    George Stansfield, a Topeka Druggist, and Ben Blow, with the California State Automobile Association, proposed an idea for a National “Transcontinental Victory Highway” the road was to be dedicated to American Forces who died in World War I. Victory Eagle sculptures were to be located whenever the route crossed county lines.

The Route travels through the Delta on Highway 160. Where It crossed the San Joaquin river a Victory Eagle was placed at the entry into Oakley and Contra Costa County.  Oakley’s memorial was dedicated on May 31, 1926 at the intersection of Bridgehead Road and State Highway 4.

It sat there for 50 years until 1976 when work began on ta new steel Antioch Bridge.  The bridge construction also included a new off=ramp and alignment for the Bridgehead Road intersection so the marker was relocated to the entrance of the Contra Costa Fairgrounds in Antioch.   Several attempts were made to retrieve the Eagle but to no avail.

Councilmembers Anderson and Romick appealed to the fairgrounds directors and stated that monument belongs to Oakley. Their response was thank you very much, possession is 9/10th of the law and we will leave it here.

So Oakley planned its own Memorial

Each pillar weighs 3,000 lbs apiece.

I was out yesterday, 12/19,  on a caching project and discovered this missing.  It has been replaced and credit given in the Log for previous finders.
