Geocache Description:

The ABC's of Geocaching

Q is for QR Code

When doing both the K & M caches in this series you learned that with these cache types that the container was not at the posted coordinates.  Both of these caches had coordinates listed that were on the trail, not far from where the actual cache container could be found.  Because both the posted and solved coordinates were so close to each other what you did not notice is that the smiley you earned was at the posted coordinates, not where you actually found the cache.  To illustrate this better, with this cache, the posted coordinates take you in front of the Swaledale City Hall.  After logging this cache, that is where your smiley will show up on your geocaching map, not along the trail.

Incidentally, if in front of City Hall was a park bench, it would be perfectly ok to place a cache there (with permission) and you would have two smiles at the same spot.  Also, you can not place a cache within 528 feet in any direction of the location of the actual container.  That is one of the things that a reviewer (more about the reviewer in R) checks on.

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of alpha-numeric two dimentional barcode first designed in 1994 for the automotive industry in Japan.

In geocaching the QR code can be used for a variety of reasons.  You could find it on the back of a sign giving you information on the next stage of a multi-cache or even at a cache site perhaps giving you a hint as to how to to unlock the container.

This QR code will give you some information that you need to find the final coordinates.  You will need a QR reader on your phone to access the required information.
