No visit to Preston is complete without stopping by the Trail Head which offers access to trout fishing, bike trails, a playground, ice cream and a little bit of history. When you pull into the trail head parking lot, you will notice a few train cars and an old Red Elevator building. This is the original, 1902 Milwaukee Elevator Co. grain building. Next to it is a restored 1939 Milwaukee Road boxcar and a 1951 caboose. The namesake for this cache is a fairmont motorcar or 'speeder' that was used to take supplies along the tracks to fix any problems that occured. You will also see a sign nearby offering information about Chimney Swifts. Audubon Minnesota recognized Preston as having the largest and most active Chimney Swift population in the state, many of which nest in the large chimney you will see.
This is a micro, log only, so byo pen or pencil. You do not have to jump over the fence/gate to retrieve the cache. It should be accessible year round, but a lot harder in winter.
