Geocache Description:

Coal has been extracted from this area of Leeds since the 17th century. Very close to this cache was the site of Temple Pit, sunk in 1815. It became part of the sprawling Waterloo Colliery, a network of mines stretching from Temple Newsam to Cross Green, all linked by a private colliery railway.

Deep coal mining at Temple Pit estate ended when the mine closed in 1968; however, that was not the end of coal extraction on the Temple Newsam estate. Opencast mining, which had begun in 1942, eventually encompassed seven sites to the south of the house. Capability Brown's 1760s landscaped grounds were almost entirely erased, as was any trace of the original pit. Workings reached within 100m of the south terrace of Temple Newsam House. Mining finally ceased in 1987, and after re-landscaping was completed there are today no traces of 172 years of mining on the estate.

At the co-ordinates, why not take a seat. The nano tube is wedged in tight, hiding in front of you in plain sight. But where?

The location is generally quiet, if somewhat overgrown during the summer, and can be muddy at any time. It is a 25 minute walk from both the 'lower' car-park at Temple Newsam and Bullerthorpe Lane (maybe less if you know the short cuts)! Placed with kind permission of Temple Newsam Estate. Good luck.

The path to the left of the fence here is not shown on all maps, but this will take you towards #7.

Congratulations to w5wdw for the impressively quick FTF.
