This is the main road between Gawcott and Buckingham. Up until the late 90’s this was a toll road which was maintained by the Buckingham Carriage and Traction Society. In 1998 the toll rose to 10p, which at the time was a great deal of money. There was local opposition to the price rise resulting in a protest which became known at the ‘Carriageway Uprising’. After 4 long months, the protesters won through and the toll reverted back to its original price of 8p. Two years later the government took the road from the society by force.
This is the fourth cache in a short loop around Buckingham. Please be careful as this is quite a busy road.
