Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the Geocaching D.C.’s Waterways series, hidden by Urban Adventure Squad students. This one was hidden by 5th grade student from Creative Minds International Public Charter School.

This geocache is hidden near (but not on!) street trees. Street trees are the trees planted between the sidewalk and the street to provide shade and to soak up rainwater as it falls. In this neighborhood, you’ll find many scarlet oak trees. Can you spot a scarlet oak street tree on this road? The scarlet oak is DC’s official tree.

Hard surfaces like sidewalks and streets do not allow water to soak into the ground the way that dirt or grass does. This creates large amounts of stormwater runoff when it rains. Stormwater runoff is rain water that does not soak into the ground, but hits a hard surface like pavement and runs over it until it reaches a storm drain. Stormwater runoff becomes polluted by automotive fluids, fertilizers and pesticides, and litter as it flows over impervious surfaces, eventually ending up in our streams and rivers. Street trees help create places where rain water can soak into the ground instead of becoming stormwater runoff.

The geocache is hidden on public property in a residential area. Please do not look for this geocache after dark and always use stealth and common sense.

This geocache is a magnetic container; be sure to bring a writing utensil to sign the log and tweezers in case the log gets stuck.
