Geocache Description:

This is a bonus cache for those who complete the Adventure Lab caches call "Iron Industry Ruins". There are 5 locations for you to visit, detailing information about the long-past iron industry in Land Between the Lakes. When you log the adventure lab cache the journal will display the clues for solving this bonus cache. You will be looking for a small ammo can with a logbook, a pen, and some swag.

The bonus cache is located near the ruins of the Iron Mountain Furnace. The Iron Mountain Furnace was built in 1855, in Tharp, TN. It was an exact duplicate of the Great Western Furnace. The furnace began firing the year it was built, and produced 1,200 tons of “pig iron” in 30 weeks. The hematite ore used for production was scattered on the surface in the region surrounding the furnace. The stack once stood 42 feet high and was 10.5 feet wide.

If you look around, you can still see remnants of the stack: bricks, rocks, and slag. In the nearby creek, you can see many pieces of slag--the characteristic blue, green, and shiny black luster of this waste product is ubiquitous in the flowing water.
