The Towner Eastbourne geocaches have all been made with the help, ideas, and stories of local people, in connection to the new artwork for Eastbourne by Mariana Castillo Deball. Complete this element of the GeoTour to discover Eastbourne’s town, seafront, and the South Downs, alongside these truly unique geocaches.
Scan the yellow QR code inside this geocache to hear Dig Deep, a new audio work in three parts (I, II, III) by artist Karolina Raczynski, bringing together local voices with unique connections to and perspectives on an archaeological dig that took place in Eastbourne (St Anne’s Hill) in 1997.
In Dig Deep I, you will hear an introduction to the delicate process of digging during an excavation.
Listening to this, you will sense the patience, care, thrill and wonder of discovering the fascinating artefacts that were unearthed during this dig. Conversations explore themes of movement, belonging, legacy and identity, and how these objects continue to connect us.
Dig Deep combines extracts from many interviews recorded over zoom during the UK's third national lockdown, with contributions gratefully received from:

The geocache container has been made by artist Amy Leung with members of the Eastbourne YMCA LGBTQ+ youth group. These geocaches reveal many engraved marks, layers, shapes and textures made with the young people through making and conversation over zoom, in connection to their personal objects and the qualities these shared with the grave goods unearthed in the St Anne’s Hill excavation.
