Geocache Description:

Stockport Town Centre Heritage Trail is a 2.5 mile walk round the centre of the town.  This multi covers only part of the walk but should take you through some of the history and culture of the centre of the town

Work your way through the stages and note down the numbers to fill out the coordinates... N53 AC.HFB W002 ID.HEG Stage 1 Millgate Originally called Milne Gate this location dates back to 1680 when it was the site of the largest corn mill in the River Goyt sadly demolished in 1822. You are close to the Glass covered market hall but in which year was it opened? 186A Stage 2 Arden Arms. Built in 1815 by George Raffald the pub was previously called Ye Blew Sloops it is a grade 2 listed building and has double cellars a bricked up tunnel entrance with old coaching stabling to the rear. You are looking for a date under the plaque at the waypoint coordinates 183B. Stage 3 St Marys Church and Heritage Centre. Keep your eyes open this location gives you two numbers for the final! The church chancel is the oldest part of the building and dates from 133C. C Can also be found on number on Heritage Trail plaque to right of fountain. The churches 125 ft bell tower was rebuilt in 1814 after the previous tower was damaged by continuous ringing in celebrations of Nelsons victory at Trafalgar. Judge John Bradshawe who presided over the court that sentenced King Charles I to death was baptised here in 1602. The heritage centre within the church is open Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat 1000 - 1530. The second number your looking for is on a public water fountain long since dried up next to Millgate Road. The date above the fountain to the right of the plaque is 1D5D. Stage 4 The Cocked Hat. The site of the rectors house. This site has been a pub since the 1790s and was previously called the Pack Horse. This name refers to an earlier age of transportation when goods were moved by trains of horses moving their wares to and from Stockport Marketplace. At this location you are looking for the number on the Stockport Heritage Trail plaque which is E. Stage 5 The Old Rectory. Reverend Samuel Smith built the rectory in 1744 although there was a previous building here in the 16th century. It was still used by the Bishops and rectors of St Marys until 1965. You are looking for the number of long vertical iron bars to left of gate -2 this is F. Stage 6 The Ice House. Up the steps and into the grounds of the Old Rectory to relive the times before fridges and freezers! During the winter ice and snow were collected and stored underground to keep foodstuffs cold. Often the insulated Ice house would still have ice and snow from the previous winter still in place! Look at the gate at the front of the ice house. You need to count the number of vertical circular bars on the gate. Stage 7 Underbank Hall. Christy Lloyd and others opened a bank here in 1824 but the history of the building goes back much further and was the town house of which family in the early 16th century? H can be found by counting up the number of letters in the surname of this family. I hope you enjoy the little walk though Stockports history and if you want to continue your travels through history why not visit the Nearby Tourist Information Office in the Marketplace and pick up a leaflet on the Heritage Trail which this cache is based on.
