Geocache Description:

St Edmund Church Costessey is situated at the edge of Old Costessy close to the River Wensum, although the actual view of the river is obscured by trees. The graveyard is pretty, but spoilt by odd signs warning of unsafe gravestones. There are some interesting gravestones, such as an unusual 19th century tombchest decorated with floral medallions & an impressive late 18th century classical urn structure, a memorial to the Wilkin family.

The unusual tower has a red brick bell stage, topped with a lead covered spire, which replaced the previous wooden structure. The building was restored in the 19th century, most of the window tracery dates from this time.

Inside the Church is large & plain, with a brick floor, with the West end screened to form a baptistery. The 14th century font is decorated with raised shields that may once have been painted. The character of St Edmunds is 19th century, but there are a few features from earlier times, such as a 16th century brass plaque dedicated to William Wood.

There are also memorials to the Jerningham family. Famously steadfast Catholics who resided in Costessey Hall. In the 19th century the majority of  the population of Costessey was in fact Catholic & the village has both a Catholic Church & School.

Just outside the South porch is a memorial plaque to 10 members of USAF 564 bomb squadron whose plane crashed in nearby Carr's Hill wood in 1945.
