The Mount Direction semaphore site was one of six semaphore stations used to convey messages from Low Head through to Launceston. The station operated from roughly 1835 until 1858 before it was superseded by an electric telegraph.
A number of convict built ruins and features remain at this historic site. Numerous information boards at the car park and ruins document points of interest.
To get there, park at the intersection of Dalrymple Road and Signal Lane. A well maintained gravel track winds it's way up the mountain for roughly two kilometres. The journey up will take around 45 minutes for those of average fitness, be sure to take some water with you in warmer weather.
On the trek you might appreciate the breeze through the trees, the rustle and scurry of critters in the undergrowth, bird song in the background and the occasional raucous screech of black cockatoos.
