W ovvero “Veronesi e Veronesità”, una serie di cache che, dedicata a personaggi, luoghi e tradizioni più o meno noti, si propone di farli conoscere o riscoprire attraverso un “Geo-itinerario” il quale, non so ancora bene dove mi/ci porterà, ma vuole essere una dichiarazione d’Amore per Verona, la mia città, il suo territorio e le persone che, ciascuno a proprio modo, l’hanno “celebrata” con la propria vita prima ancora che con le loro gesta, piccole o grandi che siano.
W8 – Preben Elkjaer Larsen
“Come i cavoli a merenda!” E’ con questo modo di dire italiano che qualcuno potrebbe rispondere alla domanda: “Che cosa c’entra un danese con la veronesità e quindi con questa serie di cache?” Infatti, dire che qualcosa o qualcuno sta come i cavoli a merenda lascia intendere che non c’entri proprio nulla con ciò di cui si sta parlando, ma se avrete la bontà di leggere il listing fino in fondo scoprirete il perché… personaggi si nasce, non si diventa!
Preben Larsen è nato a Copenaghen in Danimarca l’11 Settembre 1957 e con il suo innato spirito indomito lanciò presto la sfida alla routine; aggiunto al più comune cognome paterno il cognome Elkjaer della madre, per lasciare il segno, per essere unico, lasciò la scuola e Vanlose, il quartiere cittadino dove aveva cominciato a tirar calci al pallone e si trasferì a Colonia (D) all’età di vent’anni con la voglia di spaccare il mondo… conosciuto all’epoca più per le bravate e l’intensa vita notturna invece che per gol e assist, diverrà celebre, a questo proposito, per la risposta che diede al proprio allenatore Hans “Hennes” Weissweiler (R.I.P.) il quale, dopo averlo rimproverato perchè qualcuno era andato a spifferargli di averlo visto in un locale notturno in compagnia di una bionda e con una bottiglia di whiskey vuota sul tavolo, si sentì rispondere: “Niente di più falso… era una bottiglia di vodka!”
Pur giocando poco vinse Bundesliga e Coppa di Germania, ma dopo due anni venne ceduto alla squadra belga del Lokeren dove trovò le condizioni favorevoli per la sua esplosione: la stima della società e l’incontro con la futura moglie Nicole che lo addolcì e ne mitigò l’irrequieto spirito notturno gli permisero di acquisire equilibrio, certezza di vita e stimoli veri; 98 gol in sette anni e 190 presenze gli attirarono le attenzioni di prestigiosi club, oltre a permettergli di conquistare un posto di titolare nella nazionale danese con la quale ebbe la consacrazione agli europei francesi del 1984, dei quali la Danimarca fu indubbiamente la grande sorpresa… “We are red, we are white, we are Danish dynamite!”
Fu quindi in quell’Estate del 1984 che, preferendola a Milan e Real Madrid, Preben arrivò all’Hellas Verona dove l’amalgama perfetta di quella squadra, costruita e guidata da Osvaldo Bagnoli con il fidato Emiliano Mascetti già a partire dal 1981, permisero il rapido inserimento nelle migliori condizioni ambientali di Elkjaer e degli altri nuovi arrivati come Hans Peter Briegel; Preben divenne subito il terrore delle difese italiane e con le sue furiose e famose galoppate a rete si guadagnò l’appellativo di “Cavallo Pazzo”, trascinando gli scaligeri alla conquista dello storico scudetto e diventando il simbolo e l’idolo di quella magnifica squadra, mettendo in riga tutti gli altri campioni di allora che giocavano nel campionato italiano: Zico, Platini, Falcao, Rummenigge, Maradona, Socrates… tanto per nominarne qualcuno.
La più famosa di quelle galoppate? Naturalmente il gol senza scarpa di “Cenerentolo” nel 2–0 rifilato alla Juventus il 14 Ottobre 1984!

Per altri tre anni Elkjaer deliziò le platee italiane ed europee vestendo la maglia dell’Hellas Verona, garantendo alla squadra scaligera due salvezze tranquille ed un prestigioso quarto posto nel campionato 1986-87, mentre la delusione maggiore fu l’eliminazione dalla Coppa dei Campioni 1985-86, non tanto per l’eliminazione in sé quanto piuttosto per il vergognoso arbitraggio di Robert Wurz in favore della Juventus nella partita di ritorno; tuttavia Preben ebbe modo di riscattarsi l’Estate successiva, quando la nazionale danese fu nuovamente protagonista, questa volta ai mondiali messicani del 1986 e dove Elkjaer ottenne il quarto posto nella classifica cannonieri che si aggiunse al terzo e quarto posto al “Pallone d’Oro” nel 1984 e 1985.
Nel 1988, all’età di 31 anni, Elkjaer lasciò l’Hellas e il campionato italiano per tornare a giocare in patria nel Veile dove, nel giro di pochi anni, appese le scarpe al chiodo e terminò la propria esperienza in nazionale con all’attivo 69 presenze e 38 gol… ma ecco come, ancora oggi, Preben parla della sua esperienza veronese:
“Questa città mi è entrata nel Cuore, per tanti motivi che è difficile riuscire a sintetizzare. Io sono danese, ma per me Verona non è una città come le altre. Ho ancora la casa sul Lago di Garda e se un giorno dovessi decidere di lasciare la Danimarca so già dove rifugiarmi. Mio figlio Max è veronese. Lui è nato nel 1987…”
“…perché i tifosi del Verona sanno sostenere la propria squadra come pochi. Io ero un loro beniamino ed ero forse un privilegiato, ma l’Amore nacque spontaneo, senza forzature. Io sapevo solo ridere e giocare bene e loro mi hanno apprezzato per questo. Ancora adesso quando sono a Verona e mi incontrano per strada, mi dicono semplicemente: “Ciao Elkjaer!” Ed io sono contento perché so che non mi hanno dimenticato. La loro riconoscenza va di pari passo con la mia perché quando hai modo di conoscere ed apprezzare chi soffre con te alla Domenica e partecipa alle tue gioie e ai tuoi dolori pur non essendo in campo, ti ci affezioni. Almeno io sono fatto così. Per questo motivo, per rispetto nei confronti di chi mi ha amato e osannato fino ad invocarmi come Sindaco di Verona, non ho accettato di vestire altre maglie di società italiane. Il loro rispetto meritava il mio rispetto!”
“A Verona ho trascorso i quattro anni più belli della mia vita professionale. Finita l’’esperienza calcistica ci sono rimasto per altri due anni stabilmente perché sentivo di essere a casa mia… e questa sensazione è bellissima. Ci sono momenti in Danimarca in cui chiudo gli occhi e rivedo Verona, ma mi basta guardare Max per capire che il legame con questa città sarà per me indissolubile. Lui, Max, me lo fa presente ogni volta che ci arrabbiamo. “Papà”, mi dice, “ricordati che io sono italiano… anzi, sono veronese!” E’ furbo Max perché sa che il solo pronunciamento di quella parola fa scomparire la mia arrabbiatura. Verona città magica, parola di Preben!”
Così, dopo l’acclamazione “ad aeternum” alla carica di Sindaco da parte dei ragazzi della Curva Sud, il 17 Maggio 2018 Preben Elkjaer Larsen è stato insignito della cittadinanza onoraria di Verona e, ad un giornalista che alla cerimonia ufficiale di consegna dell’attestato gli ha chiesto di commentare il riconoscimento, il buon Preben ha risposto: “Guardi che io sono già Sindaco da trent’anni!”

W or "Veronesi and Veronesità", a series of caches dedicated to characters, places and traditions more or less known that aims to make them known or rediscover through a "Geo-route" which, I still do not know where it will take me/us, but wants to be a declaration of Love for Verona, my city, its territory and the people who, each in their own way, have "celebrated" it with their own life even before their deeds, small or great that they are.
W8 – Preben Elkjaer Larsen
"Like cabbages to snack!" It is with this Italian way of saying that someone could answer the question: "What does a Danish man have to do with veronesity and therefore with this series of caches?" In fact, saying that something or someone is like cabbages to snack suggests that it has nothing to do with what you are talking about, but if you have the goodness to read the listing till the end you'll find out why... such a character you are born, you don't become!
Preben Larsen was born in Copenhagen in Denmark on 11th September 1957 and with his innate indomitable spirit he soon threw the challenge to the routine; added to the more common paternal surname the surname Elkjaer of the mother, to leave a mark, to be unique, he left the school and Vanlose, the city district where he had begun to kick the ball and moved to Cologne (D) at the age of twenty years with the desire to break the world... known at the time more for bravado and intense nightlife instead of goals and assists, will become famous, in this regard, for the answer he gave to his coach Hans "Hennes "Weissweiler (R.I.P.) who, after scolding him because someone had gone off to tell him that he had seen him in a nightclub in the company of a blonde and an empty whiskey bottle on the table, he heard himself answer: "Nothing more false... it was a bottle of vodka!"
Despite playing little, he won the Bundesliga and the German Cup, but after two years he was sold to the Belgian team of the Lokeren where he found the favorable conditions for his explosion: the esteem of the club and the meeting with the future wife Nicole who softened and mitigated his restless night spirit allowed him to acquire balance, certainty of life and real stimuli; 98 goals in seven years and 190 appearances attracted the attention of prestigious clubs, as well as allowing him to win a place in the Danish national team with which he was consecrated to the French Europeans in 1984, of which Denmark was undoubtedly the big surprise... "We are red, we are white, we are Danish dynamite!"
It was therefore in that Summer of 1984 that, preferring it to Milan and Real Madrid, Preben arrived at Hellas Verona where the perfect amalgamation of that team, built and led by Osvaldo Bagnoli with his trusted Emiliano Mascetti already from 1981, they allowed the rapid insertion with better welcome conditions of Elkjaer and other newcomers such as Hans Peter Briegel; Preben immediately became the terror of the Italian defenses and with his furious and famous galloping to the goal he earned the nickname "Crazy Horse", dragging the Scaligeri to conquer the historic Scudetto and becoming the symbol and idol of that magnificent team, putting in line all the other champions of the time who played in the Italian championship: Zico, Platini, Falcao, Rummenigge, Maradona, Socrates... just to name some.
The most famous of those galloping? Of course the goal without shoe of “Cinderella” in the 2–0 inflicted to Juventus on 14th October 1984!

For three years more Elkjaer delighted the Italian and European audiences wearing the jersey of Hellas Verona, guaranteeing the Scala team two quiet salvations and a prestigious fourth place in the 1986-87 championship, while the biggest disappointment was the elimination from the 1985-86 Champions League, not so much for the elimination itself but rather for the shameful arbitrage of Robert Wurz in favor of Juventus in the return match; however Preben had the opportunity to redeem himself the following Summer, when the Danish national team was again protagonist, this time at the Mexican World Championships in 1986 and where Elkjaer obtained the fourth place in the top scorer classification which was added to the third and fourth place at the "Golden Ball Awards” in 1984 and 1985.
In 1988, at the age of 31, Elkjaer left Hellas Verona and the Italian championship to return to playing at home in the Veile team where, in few years, he hung up his shoes and finished his experience in the national team with 69 appearances and 38 goals... but here's how, even today, Preben talks about his Veronese experience:
"This city has entered my heart, for many reasons that it is difficult to summarize. I am Danish, but for me Verona is not a city like any other. I still have a house on Garda Lake and if one day I’d decide to leave Denmark I already know where to take refuge. My son Max is from Verona. He was born there in 1987... "
"... because the Hellas Verona fans know how to support their team like few others. I was their favorite and I was perhaps a privileged one, but Love was born spontaneously, without forcing. I could only laugh and play well and they appreciated me for it. Even now when I am in Verona and meet me on the street, they simply tell me: “Hi Elkjaer!” And I'm happy because I know they haven't forgotten me. Their gratitude goes hand in hand with mine because when you have the opportunity to know and appreciate those who suffer with you on Sunday and participate in your joys and pains even though they are not on the field, you become attached to them. At least I am like that. For this reason, out of respect for those who loved me and praised me to the point of invoking me as Mayor of Verona, I did not accept to wear other sweaters from Italian clubs. Their respect deserved my respect!"
"In Verona I spent the best four years of my professional life. After the football experience I stayed there for another two years because I felt I was at home... and this feeling is beautiful. There are moments in Denmark when I close my eyes and see Verona again, but I just need to look at Max to understand that the link with this city will be indissoluble for me. He, Max, points this out to me every time we get angry. “Dad…” says to me, “…remember that I'm Italian... rather, I'm from Verona!” Max is smart because he knows that the mere pronouncement of that word makes my anger disappear. Verona magic city, word of Preben! "
Thus, after the acclamation "ad aeternum" (for eternity) to the office of Mayor by the boys of the “Curva Sud”, on 17th May 2018 Preben Elkjaer Larsen was honored with the honorary citizenship of Verona and, to a journalist, who at the official ceremony of delivery of the attested asked him to comment on the recognition, Preben the joker replied: "Hey, I've already been Mayor for thirty years!"

A cache dedicated to the Mayor cannot not start, at least virtually, from the Verona City Hall, but to find the destination it’s necessary to help Preben in the labyrinth of opposing defenses to make goal and, along the way, collect the coordinates… at the destination, confirmed by the Geocheck, you will find the clues to reach the physical final.
