Geocache Description:

small snap lid container

Cache is set at the Madison mine.  SUV's can easily drive to the mine, but low clearance vehicles could have issues.  There are some open areas to park along the way if you want to drive part way up.

Organized as the Summit Mining Co. in 1852, worked 2 veins until 1856 when work ceased. In 1859, the company reorganized as the Madison Mining Company and began operations in 1863, dewatering mine, repairing buildings and stamp mill, adding new engine house and hoist equipment, the #2 shaft getting a new shaft house.  Work stalled in 1865.  Work resumed in 1876, but mine sold at Sheriff’s sale in 1878.  Recovered by company in 1879 which worked the east vein till 1882.  Limited copper was found. In 1885, the property was bought by the Central Mining Company for the timber value of its 1,920 acres and never worked again.  Production 1852-82 was 72,000 lbs. copper.  West shaft 120’ deep, east 180’.
