GOLDEN DUCK

Once upon a time, there lived a young cobbler, poor as a church mouse. Try as he might, he could not get out of poverty by effort alone. So he decided to try guile. He had once heard the legend of a princess who was turned into a Golden Duck by powerful magic, and who could give vast wealth to anyone able to find her, in the dungeons of the old Ostrogski Palace, on St John's Eve. The cobbler found the Golden Duck, and received from her a bag of gold and a task: by the next midnight, he was to spend all that gold on himself, and on no one else. He tried as hard as he could, but it was tough going. Some versions of the legend say he gave all he couldn't spend to a beggar, others say that a few coins got tangled up in his pocket lining. In any case, the boy failed at his task, offended the duck and got no treasure. And no one else has seen the duck since.

To those interested in the moralistic version of the legend, I recommend Or-Ot's Varsavian Legends (Legendy Warszawskie).

Those looking for a lighter take on the subject might like to see the movie called "Brewster's Millions," although it does not feature much poultry (or gold).

If you want to meet the Golden Duck, here's my idea.

MANDATORY TASKS:

Take two out of three pictures described below:

1. At the starting coordinates, you shall find a member of the duck family . She has never made me any financial offers, but admittedly I have not tried to talk to her on St John's Eve.

Take a picture of the two of you together.

 The picture must show you (or something that will clearly identify you, such as XWG) and the Golden Duck.

2. Legend has it that the young cobbler got into the Palace dungeons through a window giving onto the Tamka street. There are few windows directly onto Tamka street, so we will allow all windows accessible from the lowest level.

Find such a window and photograph your finger pointing to it. ("Accessible from the lowest level" means you can reach the window, from the ground or from a ladder, without climbing the embankment itself, either by the stairs or a ladder.)

The photo should show a window and a finger.

3. There is a palace pavilion on top of the embankment.

Climb up the stairs and take a picture of yourself and the palace.

The picture must show you (or something that will clearly identify you, such as XWG) and at least a fragment of the palace seen from the top of the embankment. The picture must clearly identify you. Pictures taken from the lower level do not count!

Post two out of these three pictures in the log. If more than one cacher is present, attach the pictures to all their logs. Logs that do not contain pictures will be removed without notice.

Clear identification of a cacher is required for photos 1 and 3. A piece of paper with your nick on it, your geocoin, a personal item like a backpack or a bike (but not a city bike), your shadow etc. are all acceptable forms of identification. Your hand or its fragment is not.

OPTIONAL TASKS.

They are NOT required to log the cache.

1. Take a picture with some other duck.

The picture must show you (or something that will clearly identify you, such as XWG) and a duck. The picture may be taken in any place you choose. Examples of ducks include: a mallard (anas platyrhynchos), a rubber duck, a sitting duck, a roast duck. Be creative. The picture must clearly identify you.

2. Take a picture while feeding ducks in winter.

The picture must show you (or something that will clearly identify you, such as XWG), ducks and food. The picture may be taken in any place you choose. The picture must clearly identify you. Remember that bread is bad for birds, the best birdfeed is minced vegetables or grain.

3. Make a dish of poultry and share it with family or friends. Take a picture.

The picture must show you (or something that will clearly identify you, such as XWG) and the dish. Including the family and/or friends would be nice. The picture may be taken in any place you choose. It must clearly identify you.

If you're vegetarian, you can substitute poultry for grain or vegetables.

4. Get a bag of gold and take a picture of yourself with it.

Remember that a photo doesn't allow checking whether the gold is real, or if there's any at all. Be creative. The picture must clearly identify you.

5. Write a short paragraph about who is your favourite duck and why is it Scrooge McDuck. Attach your reply to your log.

Writing assignment. No photos necessary.

Don't mention politics, that's not classy.

6. Play Ducks and Drakes.

Don't photograph it, just do it for your own fun. Write down in your log whether you succeeded or not.

7. Find a Golden Duck on St John's Eve and get a treasure.

You don't have to take pictures, I'll take your word for it. Just write about it in the log.

Since some optional tasks are tied to a specific time (St John's Eve, winter), log editing to correct your results is permitted.

A few definitions:

Duck - a subfamily of birds with a short neck and unpleasant breeding customs, spread worldwide. There is no scientific proof of them having access to large amounts of gold.

The Ostrogski Castle, the Gniński Palace, the Ordynacki Palace, the Zamoyski Palace are all the same building. In 17th century, prince Janusz Ostrogski was to build his palace at the site, but construction was never finished. The grounds were acquired by the Gliński family, who began building a palace of their own. Their initial plans were very expensive and had to be modified over time. In the end, just one pavilion was built instead of a whole compound as planned. Later, the pavilion passed to the ordynat Tomasz Józef Zamoyski. Hence all the names for one building.

It has housed a youth boarding house, a marketplace, a military barracks, a rubber goods factory, a music school and a theatrical school. For some time it has been a ruin inhabited by vagrants and criminals.

Over the centuries, the palace was repeatedly rebuilt to suit the purpose of the time. During World War Two it was burned down by the Germans. After the war, it was rebuilt to match drawings of the first version.

Currently, the palace houses a Frederic Chopin Museum.

ZŁOTA KACZKA

Był sobie młody szewc, biedny jak mysz kościelna. Chociaż się starał, nie mógł pracą dojść do majątku. A skoro nie mógł pracą, spróbował sposobem. Usłyszał przypadkiem legendę o królewnie zaklętej w złotą kaczkę, która może nieprzebranym bogactwem obdarować tego, kto w Noc Świętojańską odszuka ją w lochach starego Zamku Ostrogskich. Odszukał zatem kaczkę, która zmieniła się w królewnę i dała mu kiesę złota z poleceniem aby wydał ją na siebie i nikogo innego, do północy dnia następnego. Chłopak starał się jak mógł, ale ciężko mu szło. Niektóre wersje legendy twierdzą że wszystko czego nie umiał wydać oddał żebrakowi, inne że zapomniał o kilku monetach które schowały mu się w kieszeni, w każdym razie warunku nie spełnił, kaczkę obraził, skarbu nie dostał. A kaczki nikt nigdy więcej nie spotkał. Tych którzy mają ochotę na zapoznanie się z moralizatorskim opracowaniem legendy, zapraszam do przeczytania tekstu Or-Ota ze zbioru "Legendy Warszawskie". Tych którzy chcą podejść do tematu dużo luźniej zachęcam do obejrzenia filmu “Miliony Brewstera”, chociaż niewiele w nim drobiu (albo złota).

BARDZO PROSZĘ O NIE ZAMIESZCZANIE ZDJĘĆ ZROBIONYCH PRZED DATĄ PUBLIKACJI KESZA.

ZADANIA OBOWIĄZKOWE:

Wykonaj dwa z trzech poniższych zdjęć:

1. Na kordach startowych znajdziesz przedstawicielkę kaczego rodu. Mi co prawda nigdy nie złożyła propozycji korupcyjnej, ale też nigdy nie próbowałem z nią rozmawiać w Noc Świętojańską.

Zrób sobie z nią zdjęcie

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG), oraz złota kaczka.

2.  Legenda głosi że nasz szewczyk wcisnął się do zamku przez okno od strony ulicy Tamka. Bezpośrednio od Tamki jest niewiele okien, więc załóżmy że chodzi o wszystkie okna dostępne z dołu skarpy.

Znajdź takie okno i sfotografuj swój palec wskazujący je. ("Dostępne z dołu skarpy" oznacza że można się do nich dostać (z ziemi lub po drabinie) nie wchodząc na górę skarpy (po schodach lub po drabinie))

Na zdjęciu musi być widoczne okno i palec.

3. Na górze skarpy stoi pawilon pałacowy

Wejdź po schodach na górę i zrób sobie zdjęcie na jego tle

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG), oraz przynajmniej fragment pałacu widziany od strony szczytu skarpy. Zdjęcie musi Cię jednoznacznie identyfikować. Zdjęcia robine na dole nie spełniają tego warunku!

Zamieść w logu dwa spośród trzech opisanych powyżej zdjęć. Jeśli na zdjęciu jest kilku keszerów, proszę dołączyć zdjęcia do loga każdego z nich. Logi bez wymaganych zdjęć będą usuwane bez ostrzeżenia.

Jednoznaczna identyfikacja keszera niezbędna jest przy zdjęciach 1 i 3. Do jednoznacznej identyfikacji wystarczy kartka papieru z nickiem, geocoin, przedmiot osobisty jak plecak czy rower (ale nie rower miejski), zarys sylwetki w formie cienia itp. Do jednoznacznej identyfikacji z całą pewnością nie wystarczy dłoń lub jej fragment.

ZADANIA OPCJONALNE.

Ich wykonanie NIE jest wymagane do zalogowania kesza.

1. Sfotografuj się z jakąś inna kaczką.

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG) i kaczka. Zdjęcie może być wykonane w dowolnym miejscu. Przykładowe kaczki to: kaczka krzyżówka (anas platyrhynchos), gumowa kaczka, kaczka dziennikarska, kaczka na gorącym półmisku. Bądź kreatywny. Zdjęcie musi Cię jednoznacznie identyfikować.

2. Sfotografuj się podczas karmienia kaczek zimą.

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG), kaczki i karma. Zdjęcie może być wykonane w dowolnym miejscu. Zdjęcie musi Cię jednoznacznie identyfikować. Pamiętaj że chleb szkodzi ptakom, lepsze do tego celu są pokrojone drobno warzywa, lub ziarno.

3. Przygotuj danie z drobiu i podziel się nim z rodziną lub przyjaciółmi. Sfotografuj to

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG), oraz danie. Fajnie jeśli będą na nim również rodzina i/lub przyjaciele. Zdjęcie może być wykonane w dowolnym miejscu. Zdjęcie musi Cię jednoznacznie identyfikować.

Jeśli nie jadasz mięsa, możesz zastąpić drób ziarnem lub warzywami.

4. Zdobądź kiesę złota i sfotografuj się z nią

Na zdjęciu musisz być Ty (lub przedmiot który Cię jednoznacznie identyfikuje, np XWG), oraz kiesa. Na zdjęciu nie da się sprawdzić czy jest w niej złoto. Bądź kreatywny. Zdjęcie może być wykonane w dowolnym miejscu. Zdjęcie musi Cię jednoznacznie identyfikować.

5. W kilku słowach napisz kto jest twoją ulubioną kaczką i dlaczego Scrooge McDuck. Odpowiedź dołącz do loga.

Zadanie pisemne. Nie musisz nic fotografować.

Nie wspominaj o polityce, to nieeleganckie.

6. Puść kaczkę na wodzie.

Nie fotografuj tego. Zrób to dla własnej przyjemności. Napisz w logu czy Ci się udało.

(Puszczenie kaczek - rzucanie na wodę płaskiego kamienia tak aby odbił się kilkukrotnie od jej powierzchni.)

7. W Noc Świętojańską odnajdź złotą kaczkę i zdobądź skarb.

Tego też nie musisz potwierdzać zdjęciem. Uwierzę na słowo. Napisz o tym w logu. 

WYNIKI ZADAŃ OPCJONALNYCH DOŁĄCZ DO LOGA

Ze względu na to że niektóre zadania opcjonalne da się wykonać tylko w określonym czasie (zima, Noc Świętojańska), dopuszcza się edytowanie logów celem poprawienia wyniku.

Kilka definicji:

Kaczka - Podrodzina ptaków o krótkiej szyi i nieciekawych zwyczajach godowych, występująca na niemal całym świecie. Brak naukowych dowodów na to że dysponują większą ilością złota.

Zamek Ostrogskich, Pałac Gnińskich, Pałac Ordynacki, Pałac Zamoyskich, to jeden i ten sam obiekt. - W XVII w. tym miejscu miał stanąć zamek Księcia Janusza Ostrogskiego, niestety budowy nigdy nie dokończono. Teren trafił w ręce rodziny Gnińskich która rozpoczęła w tym miejscu budowę pałacu. Początkowy projekt zakładał bardzo wysokie koszty, więc był modyfikowany już w trakcie realizacji. Koniec końców z planowanego kompleksu wybudowano jeden pawilon. W późniejszym czasie pałac trafił w ręce ordynata Tomasza Józefa Zamoyskiego. To wyjaśnia skąd tyle różnych nazw jednego budynku.

Mieścił się tu pensjonat dla młodzieży, targowisko, koszary, fabryka wyrobów gumowych, konserwatorium muzyczne, szkoła teatralna. Przez jakiś czas Pałac był ruiną zamieszkałą przez włóczęgów i bandytów.

Przez wieki Pałac był wielokrotnie przebudowywany, w celu dostosowania go do aktualnego przeznaczenia. W czasie wojny został spalony przez Niemców. Odbudowano go w latach pięćdziesiątych, na podstawie rysunków pierwotnego budynku.

Obecnie jest siedzibą Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina.

Geocaching - Rodzaj fajnej zabawy na świeżym powietrzu. Może zawierać orzeszki. Albo ziarno lub warzywa.
