Vminulosti bylo toto místo skalnatým kopcem, zvaným Puhlík. V roce 1799 bylo na úbočí postaveno čtrnáct zastavení křízové cesty, podle níž se kopci začalo říkat Kalvárie. O vznik městského parku se roku 1814 zasloužil moravský gubernátor hrabě Mitrovský. 4. října 1818 v nově upravených sadech došlo ke slavnostnímu odhalení obelisku postaveného jako památník ukončení napoleonských válek. Na počest císaře byl park pojmenován Franzensberg, česky Františkov. V parku se kromě obelisku nacházela oranžérie, skleníky, zahradní altán a empírová studánka Fons Salutis. Park byl oplocen, vybaven lavičkami a hlídán hlídači.
Současný název, Denisovy sady, dostal park až roku 1919. Bylo to podle francouzského historika Ernesta Denise, který přispěl ke vzniku samostatného Československa. V průběhu druhé světové války byl park rozdělen na dvě části ulicí Husovou. Horní část parku prošla rekonstrukcí roku 1961, kdy zde byla mimo jiné vybudována kavárna s letní a taneční terasou. Z terasy jsou pěkné panoramatické pohledy na jižní část města. Ve spodní části zůstala studánka Fons Salutis, která až do roku 2010 chátrala. Po rekonstrukci slouží opět původnímu účelu.

A s far as we may know, this place was a rocky hill called Puhlik. In 1799, fourteen stops of the Way of the Cross was build up on the side of the hill. According to the Way of the Cross, the hill was called Kalvarie. In 1814, Count Mitrovsky, the Moravian governor of the town, established the town park. On October 4, 1818, in the newly reconstructed park, an obelisk was built as a commemoration of Napoleonic Wars. In honour of the emperor, the park was named Franzensberg, in Czech Frantiskov. In addition to the obelisk, there was an orangery, greenhouses, a garden gazebo and a well of Fons Salutis. The park was fenced, equipped with benches and guarded by guards.
In 1919, the current name - Denisovy sady had been given to the park according to the French historian Ernest Denis, who played an important role in the establishment of the Independent Czechoslovak State. During World War II, the park was divided into two parts by Husova Street. The upper part of the park was reconstructed in 1961 and a cafe with a summer dance terrace was built. People can enjoy beautiful panoramic views on the southern part of the city from the terrace. In the second part of the park remained historical well called Fons Salutis, which dilapidated until the reconstruction in 2010.
