This series was nominated in the 2019 Victorian Cache of the Year Awards (Best 'Series' of Caches).
Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains of the moon.
Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Walking with Hobbits
Bilbo recites this walking song in "The Hobbit" as he returns home from his great adventure. If you complete all 6 caches together on foot, your own adventure will cover approximately 3.0 km by the time you return to the starting point. You will explore the eastern half of the Healesville Freeway Reserve. The reserve has been transferred from VicRoads to Parks Victoria with the view to renaming it as community parkland. You can follow the progress on the Victorian Government website and subscribe to updates from Parks Victoria. Current media release (August 28, 2021): Revitalising the Healesville Freeway Reserve.
***SEPTEMBER 2019 UPDATE***
Work is underway to open up access to the reserve. All old horse fencing and empty buildings have been removed in this stretch, and there are numerous muddy tracks left by diggers as part of the process.
***OCTOBER 2019 UPDATE***
With the relocation of the horses, the broadening of walking routes and the good rain we’ve had lately, the grass has gone INSANE along this stretch of the series!!! At some point mowing and paths will be reestablished, but until then you should plan your approach for your best comfort. The Western approach through the fence at Morack Road is recommended. If you feel adventurous, don’t mind long grass, wet feet and uneven terrain you can continue East to the next hide. Otherwise, retreat back to Morack Road, turning left and left down Verona St to make the approach via the road.
***NOVEMBER 2019 UPDATE***
The emerging Vermont South grasslands noted in October are now thicker than ever. I imagine that as summer approaches they will have to be mown as a fire control measure. However, at the moment they are long, lush and wet! THIS CACHE HAS BECOME A REAL ADVENTURE!! I would strongly recommend gum boots, and approaching and retreating from the Western trailhead through the fence at Morack Road. Best of luck!
***DECEMBER 2019 UPDATE***
It's harvest time in Hobbiton! The council has finally cut the grass and this cache is manageable once more. I rode my bike from Morack Road, and continued down to Roads Go Ever Ever On {5} Halls.
***MARCH 2020 UPDATE***
Incredible sunrise just prior to disabling this cache during the COVID-19 outbreak. Photo courtesy of MJW1.
***OCTOBER 2021 UPDATE***
The grass is lush and wet in Hobbiton. On the plus side, the access from Morack road has improved, so I would STRONGLY recommend entering and exiting from there, rather than approaching from cache {5} to the east below
***FEBRUARY 2022 UPDATE***
It's harvest time again in Hobbiton! Now that Parks Victoria are officially managing the reserve they have commenced a mowing program, primarily for fire management at present. The hope is to mow more regularly than under DELWP management. Speaking to the local Parks Victoria officer, surveying of the land is also underway (as evidenced by the pink marker stakes) in preparation for a more permanent firebreak and much-anticipated walking track.
***AUGUST 2022 UPDATE***
The perfect time to visit Hobbiton - the grass is short and the daffodils are out! :)
***SEPTEMBER 2023 UPDATE***
Park plan finalised with details available via the Victorian Government and Parks Victoria websites.
***APRIL 2024 UPDATE***
.
The park's name has been announced as ngarrak nakorang wilam park, with work commencing later this year. The name means 'Mountain Meeting Place' and was chosen by the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. The corporation represents Traditional Owners of these lands, the Wurundjeri people, and has been a key stakeholder in planning for this park.
Your Personal Soundtrack
I love the idea of having a musical theme for this cache series, and so want to give you the option of streaming your own personal soundtrack as you walk. Howard Shore composed all the music to the Lord of the Rings movies, and his theme for the Shire is perhaps the most famous.
Alert: as the geocache owner, I ensure that the following SoundCloud link is safe to access. It has not been checked by Geocaching HQ or by the reviewer for possible malicious content, so access it at your own risk.
I hope that Concerning Hobbits will put an extra spring in your step! (opens in a new window)
Cache Access
There are additional waypoints for this cache to help with your approach from the west or the east. If you keep to the higher ground closest to the fence your trek will be easier.
Collect the code
Inside the container lid, and also on the cover of the logbook, you will find the code for the letter M. Make a note of it for solving the final cache.
