April Fools' Day has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures but its exact origins is not certain.
Some believe that it dates back to 1582. That year France switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. There were many people who refused to accept or just forgot that the New Year had moved from April 1st to January 1st. So when people tried to celebrate the New Year on April 1st they became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. It is believed that eventually the practice of playing pranks and jokes on people spread throughout Europe. After pulling a said prank or hoax you say "April Fools".
