Geocache Description:

Our first hide so something easy to start with.

This road is part of the old Bedford to Sherington turnpike and was the ninth turnpike created in Bedfordshire. A bar was placed across the road and a fee was paid depending on whether you were on foot or horseback, were herding animals, or had a coach or wagon.

If you head towards Bromham village form here you will see 110 Stagsden Road is very different from the houses around it. The building was a toll gate keeper’s cottage and was listed by English Heritage in August 1987 as Grade II, of special interest. It was built in the early 19th century for the Bedford to Sherington [Buckinghamshire] turnpike and is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and has a new clay tile roof. It is built in an L-plan and comprises one storey. This is why the road next to it is called Toll House Close.

History lesson over, this is small cache with only a log in it. Parking nearby and terrain a little bumpy but only for about 15 metres. Enjoy. :-) Well done camjam2004 who was first to find.
