Geocache Description:

Church Micro 12380...Helsington

Geocache Description:

Welcome to another addition to the popular church micro series. This one will bring you to The Chapel of St John, Helsington. This is a simple multi with the final location only a few minutes’ walk away, just off a public footpath.

The Chapel of St John

The chapel is open every day between 9.00am and 5.00pm (4.00pm between Nov & March). You don’t need to go inside to find the geocache but you do need to go inside to admire the beautiful mural. It was painted in 1919 at the end of WW1. The kneeling angels remember the faithful departed and the Lake District backdrop signifies the silent landscape and feeling of desolation of the communities deprived of their young men.

Helsington Township was one of the 24 townships which formed the greater parish of Kendal since Norman times and until the early 18C the residents worshipped at Kendal Parish Church. In 1826, John Jackson of Holesack Farm endowed the funds to build the chapel which  is in a beautiful but somewhat isolated spot. It catered for the farming population on both sides of the hill but in particular Mr Jackson who lived close by. His farm house is still standing, half a mile down the track towards Sizergh.

This information is just a little of the interesting details that can be read in the helpful leaflet produced by Underbarrow with Helsington Parochial Church Council and available in the chapel.

This geocache is not at the given co-ordinates. To find it you need to go to the stone bench which is on your left as you take the path from the gate to the church door. On the bench are two names with three words in each name. Note how many letters in each word, these are A, B, C, D, E & F.   For example T GEORGE ADAM would be A=1, B=6, C=4…………

The cache is a small click-lock box with room for goodies but no pen. It can be found at

  N 54 17. B (A+B) C     W002 47. (C-E) (D+F) (A+B)

Thanks to the National Trust for permission to place the cache .
