Geocache Description:

Bronte Pioneer Cemetery

Cache is not at the posted coordinates.

Located on West Street south of Lakeshore Road, Bronte Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Oakville and the final resting place of some of Bronte's first African American settlers. Philip Sovereign, one of the earliest Oakville settlers, deeded the east corner of his farm for a cemetery, specifying it be for people of "all orders, sects, nations and parties." Sovereign died in 1833 at the age of 55. His son Charles farmed the land until his death in 1885, and both were buried in Bronte Cemetery.

Other early names that appear in the cemetery are Adams, Butler, Lucas, MacDonald, McWane, Osborne, Ribble, Triller and Williams. Almost a third of the headstones in Bronte Cemetery belong to children and many others to mariners.

The Lake Ontario gales that took the lives of Bronte mariners also claimed the bones of some of their families. Over the years, about 70 feet of cemetery land and 100 feet of road allowance have been subsumed by the lake.

To Locate the Final Container

Step 1:  Visit the reference point on the cache page to get yourself started.  At the reference point, you will find a Historical Landmark plaque, that provides a brief history about the Bronte Pioneer Cemetery, placed by the Town of Oakville.

Step 2:  On the plaque, you will notice the original route of Ontario Street.  The caption, at one point says: “A headstone can be seen in the far right.”  You will need to find that headstone, in the cemetery in front of you.  (Initials of deceased, “JCT”).

Step 3:  Once you have located the headstone in Step 2, stand directly in front of it, and project a waypoint to locate the final cache container:

Find JCT’s age at death and multiply by 1.58, to determine the distance in metres.  Then identify the age of JCT’s Second Wife, at death,  and add 3 to determine the angle in degrees.  A geochecker has been provided to help you zero in on the final.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.

Step 4: Off you go to find the finl container, a Lock and Lock, tucked into the corner behind a rock.

Good Luck, and Happy Geocaching!
