Many years ago, Kezar Stadium at Golden Gate Park was a much larger structure that would fill with cheers for NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers, who once called this space their home. Today, the 10,000 seat multi-use stadium offers access to a track, making it an ideal location for hosting major sporting events. It is also a favorite of local runners and joggers. Adjacent to the stadium is the Kezar Pavilion – an indoor space focused on accommodating a range of sporting activities, including roller derby.

Things to Do at the Kezar Stadium

Located in the southeast corner of Golden Gate Park, Kezar Stadium was constructed between 1922 and 1925. In addition to the 49ers (tenants from 1946 to 1970), the Oakland Raiders is another professional football team that used the stadium in 1960. The stadium also has a movie-making history, as the fictional Scorpio Killer in the Clint Eastwood film ‘Dirty Harry’ worked as a caretaker at the stadium. Because of this, several scenes were filmed at the stadium.

During the 1970s, the stadium became a watering hole for music lovers, as Kezar transformed into an outdoor concert venue. Musicians, such as Led Zeppelin, Joan Baez, The Grateful Dead, Waylon Jennings, Carlos Santana, and Neil Young, have all performed at the stadium.

While the original stadium was demolished in 1989 to make way for a more modern structure (nicknamed ‘Little Kezar’), a replica of the original concrete arch at the entryway highlights its former glory. Other upgrades included the installation of an eight-lane, all-weather track, as well as a large grass athletic field.
