Welcome to the Taconic 2019 Winter Geocaching Series!
Rockwood Hall is considered one of the premier architectural landscapes in an estate setting by Frederick Law Olmsted – whose many well-known projects include Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City and the Emerald Necklace chain of parks and waterways in Boston.
There was a great deal of forestry practiced here, setting out young trees and transplanting large trees. Rockwood contains many specimens of rare trees, including Golden Oak, Weeping Beech, Purple Beech, Cutleaf Beech, English Beech, American Beech, Ginkgo, Weeping Willow, White, Red and Scarlet Oak, Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce, Pink Horsechestnut, White and Pink Dogwood, and Dwarf Japanese Maple.
Beech tree bark has been said to resemble elephant skin. While no elephants were known to inhabit Rockwood Hall, there were plenty of beech trees! And this elephant’s “eye” is hiding a cache. No worries if you’re not tall … there’s a natural step you can use.
