It's fun driving along Route 9 and seeing all of the places where Route 9 was rerouted over the years. Here is one of the places where it is obvious what it used to be.
This is a short walk from a section of old Route 9. This is now Lind Lane but Route 9 used to come through here. You are looking for a green container in a winter-friendly spot. PLEASE DO NOT ACCESS FROM ROUTE 9. Only access this cache from Lind Lane, east of the cache.
This is a dead end road that ends in a turnaround. It's also a good spot to park for hiking up to a couple of more extreme caches, and it's a spot to park for access to the Catamount Trail, a cross country ski trail that runs the length of the state.
From reviewing Vermont Agency of Transportation map archives it appears that this section of Route 9 was rerouted between 2004 and 2005. Route 9 traveled right through here, before the road was rerouted to make it straighter and higher above the river. I added a photo that shows the state highway map from 2004, available here for further study: 2004 Searsburg map.
This is sixth in a growing series of caches marking old sections of Route 9 between Brattleboro and Bennington.
