Thanks for helping the city of Pickens celebrate our 150th anniversary! Have fun learning about our history!
In 1868, the Upstate county of Pickens, SC was formed with Pickens as the County Seat. Five years later, a Presbyterian mission formed and met in local churches. A formal organization of Pickens Presbyterian Church took place in July 1878. C.L.Hollingsworth donated the land for this church.
In 1882, a white frame church was built on the present site. Rapid growth warranted building in 1923 a brick church comprised of a sanctuary and basement. The 1956 addition of the east wing added a pastor’s study and classrooms. The historic organ in the sanctuary was acquired in 1985.
In 1979, construction of the Education Building added new offices, more classrooms, and space for the Child Development Center. The west wing was complete in 1992, providing a spacious fellowship hall and kitchen, as well as administration and conference rooms. The 1923 sanctuary was enlarged at this time.
In 2003, Pickens Presbyterian Church celebrated its 125 Anniversary. By 2004, the Education Building did not meet state fire safety laws for a child development center. To continue this important ministry to our community, a new building for the CDC was constructed in 2006 on Cedar Rock Street. At the same time, extensive renovations were done throughout the church building.
The history of enlarging and renovating spaces reflect the dynamics of a community dedicated to the living God. In gratitude, we come to worship, to learn evermore of the ways of God and God’s will for us, to enjoy life together and to serve this community and the wider world. Blessed beyond our understanding, Pickens Presbyterian Church is committed to the glory of God and the service of people.
