Geocache Description:

This is the only spotted breed of dog, although when first born, puppies are plain white! No two dogs have the same number and pattern of spots. It is believed that they come from Dalmatia, a region in modern-day Croatia. In previous centuries, they were used as coaching dogs, following horses and carriages on long journeys.

In the 1800s, the horse-driven fire engines were accompanied by Dalmatians. If there was no fire, the dogs would act as watchdogs, preventing thieves from stealing the horses or equipment. In the case of a fire, the dogs would dash outside and bark to let people know they needed to get out of the way, so the wagons could get to the fire. Whilst the fire was put out, the Dalmatians would distract and comfort the horses who are afraid of fire.

Famous Dalmatian owners include Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Ingrid Bergman, Marlon Brando, John Wayne and President George Washington.

FUN FACT:
Keeping with the tradition of coach dogs, Budweiser keeps 3 Dalmatians to travel with the Clydesdale hitches. The breed has been associated with the brewery since 1950, when a Dalmatian was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdale's mascot!

The Dalmatian is Britain's 39th most popular dog.
