This cache is now a typical micro- sized container with only a log sheet inside. It goes without saying, but please carefully replace the cache where found!
This cache is located beside a bridge which passed over the Newport to Sandown railway line which ceased operating in the 1960's. It is close to the former Merstone Junction Station. The track bed is nowadays a part of the Cowes to Newport to Sandown cycle route, and is known as the Red Squirrel Trail - it also forms a part of National Cycle Route No 23.
The railway was originally in a shallow cutting at this section and this was in-filled after the rail closure, but subsequently re-excavated to form a part of the cycle track! Unusually, this section of the route now has three parallel tracks - a cycleway, a bridle path and a footpath. Take care if walking on the cycle track - at times there are a lot of cyclists passing through
