The judicial branch of the US government is a separate but equal branch, along with the executive and legislative branches. When this country was founded, this was a new idea, as previous governments contained the judiciary within the executive branch. While judges cannot create laws, they are responsible for interpreting and applying civil and criminal law. They may also overturn laws if it is deemed they conflict with higher laws or the constitution.
We know that judges bear a great responsibility to uphold the laws of the land and apply them fairly. But did you know there is a previously unknown set of rules they must follow while doing so? A recently leaked document titled "Secret Code of Trials Under Scrutiny" dictates the behavior of judges while they are being reviewed. Below is a sampling of the more than 100 duties listed therein.
