Geocache Description:

Featherbed is such a beautiful road, with old historic houses and a bridge with a fish ladder! One of the nearby houses, the Stephen Northup house, is considered one of the 6 oldest dwellings in New England, having been first constructed in 1660! Another interesting trivia tidbit is that "Stephen Northup’s great-grandson was Capt. Henry Northup, whose slave Mintus was freed in 1797. Mintus took Northup as his last name, and had a freeborn son, Solomon Northup, the subject of the Academy Award winning film 12 Years a Slave."

So make sure to check out that house, while being respectful, as it is a private residence.

Near the fish ladder on the bridge over the Annaquatucket river, you can check out the remains of an old mill, constructed in 1832, which once made red and blue flannel and Kentucky Jeans material, hydropowered from the pond. The mill burned in 1875 and was replaced by a cotton waste mill, and that structure might be more of what is visible.

You do NOT need to climb over the bridge or go down embankment to find the cache... you will be able to find it from standing on the road. Happy caching, and enjoy these pieces of history!
