Situated in the heart of downtown, the Milford Green is a wonderful space for recreation, events, and memorials. At over 1,900 feet, it is the second longest green in New England, and boasts the state's tallest flagpole at 110 feet. Memorials honoring war veterans line the eastern half of the green, along with a bell that served as the city's first fire alarm. Parades often conclude at the gazebo in the middle, and in the warmer months, artisan festivals take up the length of the green where vendors can set up tents complete with electricity.
To the east of the green, the Wepawaug River runs through downtown, forming the Duck Ponds, passing by city hall, flowing underneath Memorial Bridge, and emptying into the Milford Harbor. In fact, the area comprising Milford was originally called 'Wepawaug" due to the river. Milford is one of 169 Connecticut towns, and one of over 40 that had an original Native American name.
