Geocache Description:


[ENG] Even if we're definitely not in a karstic plateau, along these flat rock banks you'll find the demonstration that besides meteorology and sea action, also karstification is responsible for shaping the area.
Karstic corrosion of limestone rocks is caused by permanence of water in small depressions, until evaporation ends its erosive action over calcium carbonate; while usually the active agent is rain, here it is caused mainly by seawater coming in because of high/low tide levels, or when waves are generated by the wind or by boat passage. Solution pans - synonyms: (Croatian) kamenica; (Slovenian) kamenitza; (German) opferkessel; (British) panhole; (Spanish) tinajita; (Italian) vaschette di corrosione - are shallow solution basins or closed depressions that develop on bare limestone, generally characterized by flat bottom and overhanging sides.

The initial form is a closed hollow created by a humus patch; the depression is then enlarged by the solution effect generated by water collecting between slight ondulations. Generally they have overhanging side walls, a flat floor, and an overflow channel connecting to another depression. The floor can be covered by algae (that produce carbon dioxide with respiration, thus lowering water pH and aiding a further solution), and the dissolved carbonate is usually carried away when rain (or, as here, tides) brings in new water causing an overflow.
The shape can be rounded or elongate, with diameters rarely greater than 50-80 cm; depth is much smaller than diameter. Active solution pans usually have a darker colour than surrounding rock: brown, black or reddish.

In order to log this Earthcache as found, you need to answer to the following questions:
1. What are the dimensions of the solution pan located at the coordswhich is the biggest in the area?
2. What is the depth of the active basin (as measured from its rim)?
3. Where is the overflow channel oriented?
4. What is the colour of the basin bottom? What can you tell by this information?
