Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden at an abandoned road roller. This was once pulled behind another vehicle along new logging roads. The big concrete blocks on the corners make it very heavy and help to compact the surface of the road.

If you continue down to the end of this spur and walk just a bit farther through a few trees to the edge of the gorge, you'll come across some of the remains of the unique Williams Creek "bedspring" suspension bridge. Around 1960, BC Forest Products crews heard that the cables on the Boston Bar cable-ferry were being replaced, so they jumped on the chance to buy them. Engineer Glen Forrester designed this unique bridge to be supported on top of four lengths of the cable run across the gorge, with a wood plank deck on top. Heavy equipment couldn't use this bridge, but logging crews and the general public were able to use it to get directly between the Shawnigan and Port Renfrew areas. Unfortunately, it was dismantled in the late 1970s, but some of the cable and wood deck can still be seen at the edge of the gorge.
