Les halles centrales de Lille, situées le long de la rue Solferino, ont été édifiées suite au VIIe agrandissement de 1858. Ancêtres du Marché d'Intérêt National, ces halles représentaient un lieu d'échange de denrées entre les producteurs et les détaillants. Au début du XXe siècle à Lille, on trouve plusieurs halles couvertes: le Marché du Château (disparu, halles Saint-Martin) dans le Vieux-Lille, le Marché Gentil-Muiron (disparu, place Gentil-Muiron) dans le quartier Saint-Sauveur, le Marché de la Nouvelle Aventure (conservé, halles de Wazemmes), les Halles Centrales (conservées, place des Halles).
Le principe des halles n'a pas subsisté à Lille, hormis à Wazemmes où le bâtiment a conservé sa vocation première. Les autres lieux ont été rasés ou reconvertis en raison d'une trop grande obsolescence et d'un risque sanitaire. Cette ambiance très particulière n'existe donc plus. En ce qui concerne les halles centrales, elles ont été remplacées par un supermarché qui a été intégré dans la structure métallique qui existe toujours.

The central halls of Lille, located along the street Solferino, were built following the VIIth enlargement of 1858. Ancestors of the National Interest Market, these halls represented a place of exchange of commodities between producers and retailers. At the beginning of the 20th century in Lille, there are several covered halls: the Castle Market (disappeared, halls Saint-Martin) in Old Lille, the Marché Gentil-Muiron (disappeared, place Gentil-Muiron) in the Saint-Martin district. Savior, the Market of the New Adventure (preserved, halls of Wazemmes), the Central Market Halls (conserved, Place des Halles).
The principle of halls did not subsist in Lille, except in Wazemmes where the building has kept its original vocation. The other places have been razed or reconverted because of too much obsolescence and a health risk. This very special atmosphere does not exist anymore. As for the central halls, they have been replaced by a supermarket that has been integrated into the metal structure that still exists.
