PARSON PETE - The Reverend Peter Emerson has been Vicar of St Agatha’s Parish Church, Egam Newby for 18 months. Previously he was vicar of a parish in Darlington. He has been a geocacher for four years with 1,023 finds. He was eager to welcome the MEGA and had encouraged Jarvis90 to provide the campsite. He had also offered to lay a short series in the vicinity, hoping this would bring visitors to the remote village and more casual visitors to the church to see the Jacobean pulpit and mediaeval font. The Verger had disapproved, being heard to tell the Post Mistress that there would be “dirty boots tramping up the churchyard path into the church and leaving mud all over the nave”.
He and the Verger had regular disagreements in the vestry when the choir was present, generally about reordering the back of the church to provide a toilet and kitchen area, proposed changes to what the Verger considered traditional church services, the choice of “awful pop songs that masquerade as hymns” and the use of sheep in the churchyard to cut the grass.
