Geocache Description:

These were bred to be professional lapdogs for Chinese royalty. It has also been called the Lion Dog and there is a legend that the Pekingese was the product of a love affair between a marmoset and a lion. According to the legend, the lion asked the Patron Saint of Animals, Ah Cha, to be shrunk so that he could be with his beloved marmoset. However, he insisted on keeping his heart and character. This is why the Pekingese is so brave and bold.

The Pekingese was brought to Britain at the end of the 2nd Opium War. The Pekingese was around as early as the 8th Century, during the Tang Dynasty in imperial China. Chinese royalty adored and pampered their Pekingese dogs. The dogs also acted as little guard dogs for their owners. They were bred small enough to fit inside the huge sleeves of ancient Chinese garments. The dog would pop out of the sleeve and start barking to scare off any threats.

Famous Pekingese owners include Queen Victoria, Shirley Temple, Betty White.

FUN FACTS: The name came about as China's capital, Beijing, used to be commonly referred to as Peking.

During the Tang Dynasty, only royalty were allowed to breed or own a dog. If a person met one of the dogs, they had to bow and show respect.
