Geocache Description:

St Michael the Archangel, Laxton

ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, LAXTON

St Michael the Archangel, Laxton is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 11 August 1961. Also Grade II listed are the gate piers and gate into the churchyard. They were listed on 28 April 1986. Further Grade II listed is a cross to the south of the church which also achieved listed status on 28 April 1986.

The building dates from C13th, C14th and C15th with a major restoration between 1859-60 being carried out by T.C Hine of Nottingham.

The layout of the building consists of a west tower, nave, north aisle, north aisle chapel, south aisle, chancel, south chancel chapel and south porch.

The tower was completely pulled down during the restoration before being re-built and re-roofed. During the tower re-build the nave was shortened by one bay each side.

Inside, the rood screen, made of oak and dating from the C15th stretches along 7 bays.

There is an Easter Sepulchre dating from C14th.

The font is an octagonal bowl with a moulded rim, clustered keeled shaft on a chamfered square base and dates from C17th.

The octagonal pulpit dates from 1916, the carved timber lectern from 1898 and the desk lectern from 1927.

There are various memorials dating from 1287-1398 dedicated to members of the de Everingham family who fought during the Crusades.

The marble and slate war memorial tblet, dated 1919, also hangs in the church.

The church is well worth a visit as it also contains lots of reference material and information on strip farming as Laxton is the last place in the UK to still farm by this method.
