Ashton Villa is one of the most famous homes on the island. Built by James Moreau Brown beginning in 1859, his family occupied the house by 1861. Mr. Brown lived in the house until his death in 1895. Mrs. Brown passed away in 1907. The house went to their daughter Bettie, who lived there until her death in 1920. The youngest daughter or the Browns, Mathilda then inherited the home, leaving it to her daughter Alice in 1926. The house was sold to the Shriners, who used it as offices until 1970, when the house was taken over by the Galveston Historical Foundation, who opened it to the public in 1974. The house is not currently open for tours but is used as the Galveston Historica Society’s visitor center for the island and is available for rent for special events.
