Geocache Description:

Chryston as a village has existed for about 500 years. Local historians and enthusiasts have published various books describing the history in great detail which is available in open sourse, please see  http://www.chryston.org.uk

This cache will take you to a couple of spots mentioned in this website.

Did you know Cryston has it's own Poet Laureatte???

Walter Watson (1780-1854),  lived and died in the village . Watson,   son   of   a   weaver,   had   a   chequered   life.   He   was   principally   a   weaver   but   he   spent time   as   a   farm   hand,   a   sawyer,   three   years   soldiering,   and   working   in   a   print   work.   He   was for   a   time   secretary   of   the   local   branch   of   the   Weavers'   Union.   He   married   a   local   farmer's daughter   and   had   a   family   of   nine   to   support.   He   found   he   had   the   ability   to   pen   rhymes in   a   simple   manner   and   on   topics   known   to   his   listeners.   Some   of   these   were   later published,   and   some   put   to   music.   He   became   known   as   the   "Poet   Laureate"   of   Chryston, and his fame spread throughout the parish of Cadder. The   granite   obelisk   which   stands   in   Chryston   Parish   churchyard   marks   his   birthplace,   and his grave can be found in the lee of the church next the dividing wall.

The first coordinates will take you to Chryston Parish Church. At the east end of the cemetary lies a memorial stone. The date this was erected by subscription was ABCD.

Once you have noted these numbers walk eastwards on Main Street. Continue eastwards onto Graystone Manor. On the right hand side you will see a path dropping down, follow this path for about 400 meters towards Bedlay Manor (This is quite often muddy and can be slippy).

Bedlay Manor

You will see a carving on the wall to your right showing where the Bedley well used to be. Just after this you will see a flight of steps going up towards the grounds of the manor. On the ground, to the right of the bottom step is a stone with a grid carved on it. The grid is X squares top to bottom, and Y squares left to right.

The actual cache is located at N55 054 (Y/2)(B-Y)C W04 005 D(6+A)(Y-X). You do not need to go down any steep slopes to reach it.
