Geocache Description:

“Give me a home among the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair”

“Gum trees” is a popular Australian song written in 1974 by Wally Johnson and Bob Brown. It was submitted as an entry in the Australian National Anthem Quest which ultimately selected “Advance Australia Fair” as our national anthem. “Gum trees” has since become one of the most recorded Australian songs of all time. Its popularity grew enormously when Don Burke used a cover of the song as the theme to his highly rated National TV program Burkes Backyard.

Cache location
The cache is found along the bike path between Mitcham and Heatherdale stations. It is a 180 mL sistema container and it calls a Red Stringybark home. Many of the trees here have individually-numbered metal tags, however the tree you are looking for isn’t one of them.

Of course, there are always many ways to get home. When you first spot this cache, you may be wondering how best to retrieve it - but if you look closely, you will soon discover the easy path home!

Be aware that cyclists can arrive unexpectedly, particularly from the direction of Mitcham station to the West, so always keep half an eye out and be ready to mask your activities from muggle eyes!

Tree tag information
If you’re curious about those shiny metal tags, here’s some information courtesy of The.Arborist:

“We used them as part of the Level Crossing Removal project so we could easily communicate with the guys on the ground when they needed to protect, remove or prune a tree. Much easier to use a number and a really clear tag to make sure we kept as many trees as possible.”
