Geocache Description:

From NM Hwy 4 and NM Hwy 485 intersection (near Jemez Springs) take NM485 until it becomes Forest Road 376 and continue on FR376 to bridge over creek at Porter's Landing. from Porter's Landing, follow FR376 NorthEast for approx 6mi, park at N35 51.870 W106 43.079, go uphill approx 200' to search for cache.

This was cache #3 (of 4) planted this day by Cap'n Swoop, 1st Mate "Pink" (who has been known to friends by that nickname since way before the pop singer), and crewmates Alex and Stacy. See our website of (visit link) for details on all 4 caches together, plus hint pictures. Please use this if you have problems, as this cache involves a steep climb and is not easily spotted, judging from reports.

Had a difficult time aquiring satellites at cache location, position data is cross between best average and topo map contour data. Original coords I took seem to have been off despite this, so coordinates now reflect those found by dplugge -thanx,dave-, until I can get an exact fix that's any better (if that's possible).

The cache is in a metal ammo box, painted red and lettered with the cache name on it. Original Contents of Cap'n Swoop's "Dark Side O' The Moon" cache are:

2 postmarked stamps from Guinea Bissau, Africa
1 container of fossils (crinoids, corals, and brachiopods)
2 Obsidian "apache tears" nodules
1 deck of travel playing cards, with case
1 45RPM Rob Zombie collector's record - as in, Licorice Pizza (that's right, you gotta be an audiophile AND a metal head!)

The cache area is very interesting. A massive outcropping of "swiss-cheesed" rocks gives the location the appearance of a lunar landscape. Because of the numerous handholds in the rock face, the spot is a favorite for beginner rock climbers. To the south of the outcropping across FR376 and the meadow, is a semi-hidden valley that is great for backpackers, horse riders, and mountain bikers to camp in. There is no motorized vehicle traffic allowed in the canyon (a log fence blocks access), but the area is open for all other uses. A small horse corral sits at the valley entrance, lots of unusual rock formations, single-track trails, and small shaded meadows await beyond.
