yarri-a-bini

Yarriabini is in the traditional lands of the Ngambaa people. The Yarrahapinni area is also on the boundary of the Gumbaynggirr and Dunghutti Aboriginal lands.

The Dreaming Story

The cultural Dreaming Story is of two Sand Goanna sisters who stayed behind when the tribes went to war. At the time there was no ocean, only land. They were attacked by a young man who had hidden himself from the war party and who wanted to marry the young sister, but was refused. The sisters killed the young man, and in anger for the tribe leaving him, cut off the tribe by creating the ocean.

Two young Koala Brothers rescued the tribe by using their intestines to make a magic bridge to Scott’s Head. While the tribe were returning their brother-in-law, the Tiger Cat, threatened to cut the bridge down. He also named, and so made, the shark and the whale.

Once back on land, the Tiger Cat began tormenting the ocean, which was previously calm. The ocean then formed waves that threatened to drown the whole tribe. The Koala Brothers then saved the tribe by drowning the Tiger Cat.

One Koala then went into a cave underground to Bald Hill. The other Koala went into another cave that led to Yarriabinni, however, this Koala was met by an enemy who cut him up with two boomerang. The Koala’s head rolled down creating a gully on the southern side of the mountain, while the three body parts became the three peeks of Yarriabinni (Mt Yarrahapinni).
