Geocache Description:

This is part of a group of 4 caches around York that will take you to visit WWII airfields, some are in working order and others returning to nature.

The cache is accessible from a couple of footpaths, the simplest starts at the Stonebridge farm end. You can park just off the road then walk round the public footpath that follows the perry track (perimeter track in airfield speak).

During the daytime Mon - Sat, there can be a lot of farmer activity, please take care as large tractors wiz up and down quickly.

Follow the track until you reach Stub Wood which was the location of the airfields bomb store. The cache is a very full 1.25L container wrapped in a black dustbin bag.

If you take a long walk round to the south of the field and you have a map you should be able to spot the dispersal areas were the aircraft would park spread out over the entire field to avoid attack from the air.

Acaster Malbis airfield opened in 1942 as a grass fighter airfield with USAF aircraft. Then a large heavy bomber base was developed. Unfortunately the field was beset with problems of fog rolling in from the river close by as a result many aircraft crashed in the area. The airfield closed in 1946. As you can see the farmer is slowly ripping up the runways and recovering the stone.
